Crunchy, with a blue-violet skin and a deep yellow pulp. What are we talking about? About the Garda Trentino fruit par excellence! The plum from Dro.

The origins of the PDO and De.Co. (the municipal mark of qualityplum from Dro date back to 1284, as it is shown in the 42 specifications of the Regulation Papers of the Sarca River. Since that time, this sweet fruit has become the special testimonial for an area that produces culinary excellences to be tasted no matter the season.

THE FEATURES OF A FRUIT THAT IS ELIXIR OF LIFE

When the sun donates its warmest rays, in the middle of August, the plum from Dro peeps out on the local tables, giving away its precious juicy essence.

This fruit contains in fact high levels of antioxidants and vitamins, beta carotene and potassium. Polyfenols aren’t missing either (do you know they help you to prevent from wrinkles?!) and thanks to this chemicals the plum from Dro protects us from the damaging sunbeams, without straining the capillaries and hear ye! it has also a noticeable antidepressant effect (actually, we are pretty sure it’s impossible to suffer from depression in Garda Trentino).

All these excellent features are due a Mediterranean climate that enjoys some 10 hours of sunlight a day and a wind, called Ora, that weakens the bitter cold.

WHEN AND HOW TASTING IT

Do you now feel like tasting it? From mid-August to October, the plums from Dro will be available in several local shops.

Go wild shopping then. They are a precious break (low-calories and handy to eat), a scrumptious dessert or break to take to the lake with you on a beach day.

And if you fancy cooking instead of eating it raw, you can’t miss the chance to prepare some delectable plum dumplings! You have the recipe here.

What about winter? How is it possible to survive without the plum from Dro? That’s easy, you can eat it dried, even sweeter and tastier. It is a real healthy and nutritious overindulgence.

I’m to the stove making some culinary experiments, is someone ready to “get sacrificed” out there?
